We had our au pair open a bank account to make it easier to pay her by check. The bank has one of those "you must take money out at least 5x per month" policies if you don't want to get charged the $6/mo service fee. She doesn't spend a lot of money, so she figured that she'd use her bank card for meals when outside the house for class. On the evenings our au pair had class (M/W 5:30p-9:30p), she charged her dinner to her bank card over at school. She submitted these receipts to me for reimbursement since she wasn't at home for dinner.
I checked with our local coordinator, and learned that the au pair is responsible for meals outside the home (unless you are taking the family out to dinner - In that case you should pony up and pay for her too as part of the family). That saved me $12/week!!
FOOD OUTSIDE THE HOME
I guess there are two ways to look at this. If the Au Pair is supposed to be treated as a member of the family then it would go without saying that her meals would be covered no matter whether in or out of the house if she is on duty. On the other hand, I think that if she chooses not to eat at home or meals that are prepared, then she should be responsible for paying for her own food on her own time.
Wow- did you really pay for your au pairs meals?
That is shocking! I can't believe you paid for her expenses while she wasn't with you! You are a big person. I am glad that you got it all straightened out.
You are inspiring me to write a new blog post-- "what to pay for!"
Only once...
I only paid for one meal, since I told her I would. She has to leave at 4:45p to get to her 4 hour class...I knew she hadn't eaten. I realized I was too nice that night and immediately emailed the coordinator just to confirm I wasn't responsible...After I received the response from teh coordinator that she needed to pay for it herself, I told her and now she is either paying on her own to eat out, or sometimes packing up a home-made sandwich.
