Social Networking is your friend!

Are you considering an au pair? Wondering how you are going to get the inside scoop on them? Wondering what they are like socially? If you do a little digging, and spend the time, you are sure to get your answers!

First, start with the au pairs references. Read thoroughly through their references and consider contacting each reference via email with your questions. I have found that most former employers- assuming they aren't family members or family friends- tend to be VERY HONEST in their assessment.

Second, google the au pair. Does the au pairs name show up in the listings?  Is there anything relevant to you?

Third, browse the social networks. Visit:

  • Facebook
  • Twitter
  • MySpace
  • YouTube

You will typically find photos, "friends", videos they made, music preferences, personal interests, etc. You will also get a sense of how Westernized they are and how connected they may be. If nothing else, it will serve as another data point in assessing an au pair candidate that is thousands of miles away!

The reality is- employers do it, colleges do it and people google each other all the time. Why not use it to help fill in some of the blanks?

If you were hiring an American 20-something, wouldn't you do a little digging on the social networks?! Au pairs are no different!

Googling is Good

Before we hired our au pair, we were interviewing girls in our city.  I learned A LOT about our potential sitters because of what they had posted online!  I could tell when one was a total partier (pics posted of course - yikes), and I also was psyched to see that one of our regular babysitters had a bunch of postings with positive, "We are praying for you" type affirmations from friends...so you can get the gyst of what type of person your caregiver might be, and what kind of company they keep.

Definitely do you research homework!

One thing I'd love to know is the names of some of the websites more common in Spanish or other cultures (non-English) - That's probably where it is harder for an English-dominant family to do their homework.  Do any of you know what websites are frequented by the 18-26 crowd in Spanish? German? French? etc.
